Is Reiki a Religion?

Updated: Jul 19, 2019

My very first blog will address a common misconception and question about Reiki -

is Reiki a religion?

My short, quick, two-word answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Before I discuss that, I want to give an abbreviated version about how Reiki began.

Mikao Usui was a Japanese Buddhist and founder of the healing modality, which he later named “Reiki”.

Rei“meaning universal life and “Ki” which means energy.

Reiki was brought to the West by Hawayo Takata, a woman of Japanese heritage who was an American citizen, born in (what was then) the territory of Hawaii. She was solely responsible for taking Reiki from Japan and spreading it to the West.

Of course, that is a condensed version of A healing modality that has deep roots and many branches - with the core of it being the work of Mikao Usui.

Circling back to the question, is Reiki a religion? Reiki is not a religion - it is a spiritual practice. People often think

religion and spirituality are one and the same. Have you ever met someone who had a religion but was not spiritual? Likewise, have you ever met someone who was spiritual but had no religion? Religion and spirituality are two different concepts that somehow intertwine but are quite different from each other. Since Reiki is a spiritual practice, it can align with any belief system that you already incorporate into your everyday life.

On a personal level, Reiki has actually enhanced and connected me deeper to my own religious and spiritual beliefs.

Reiki is a gift that keeps on giving, and the best part is we all have the ability to channel life force energy and use it to our highest good.
